Study in Blue, Watercolor by Arlene G. Woo

This came quickly and was fun to paint.  I particularly like the vase although I was focusing more on the flowers.  Fabriano - my paper of choice.  The image is 10.5"x12".

Oia, Visit from Hawaii Artist Arlene G. Woo

I was fortunate enough to go on a painting trip to Greece a few years back.  Some of the scenes have stayed in my mind with blue and white being the primary colors.  I painted this in an abstract approach on hot press.

Blue Wind, acrylic by Hawaii Artist Arlene G. Woo

Blue Wind is and 18"x18" acrylic on canvas.  I switch back and forth between acrylic and watercolor as I can't seem to figure out which media I prefer.  Acrylic gives me a lot more confidence.

Koi on acrylic, original by Arlene G. Woo

After painting a couple of koi paintings on Yupo, I decided to see how they would look in acrylic.  I think I like them almost as much because the color looks deeper.  I like the movement and grace of the fish.  This is an 18"x18" canvas gallery wrap and may be purchased for $350.

Koi Couple, original watercolor by Arlene G. Woo

Maybe it's the fact that we used to have a koi pond, or maybe it's the pond at my granddaughters' school, but I like the challenge of the fish in water.  This image is on Yupo which does not allow one to layer.  It does make wonderful water, though.  This is a quarter sheet. Please contact me: Arlene G. Woo
It may be purchased for $250 unframed.  SOLD

aMazing Journey, watercolor by Arlene G. Woo, Hawaii artist

This image emerged through pouring, scrunching, painting and drawing with pastel pencil and ink.  I gave myself quite a challenge by letting the materials act on their own and then trying to determine something pleasing.  I must say the longer I looked at the painting, the more I liked it.  I hope you feel the same.  Please let me know:  Arlene G. Woo.  This is a half sheet of Fabriano paper (my favorite paper).

It's Big!, original wave watercolor

This wave watercolor was selected by juror Robert O'Brian for the Hawaii Watercolor Society Open Exhibition at Linekona, the Honolulu Museum of Art School Main Gallery. Living in Hawaii, I've always enjoyed the power and color of the water. The image is 15"x22" on Fabriano paper.  Comments: Arlene G. Woo

Meditation by Arlene G. Woo

This is an acrylic on an 18x18 canvas wrap base.  For some reason I like this proportioning for an image, maybe it's because I've sold several with this balance on full watercolor sheets.  There's nothing like a sale or a positive comment to spur on painting.  I also like to suggest that there is always something below the surface that we need to accept or at least acknowledge.  contact me:

Made It! Watercolor by Hawaii Artist Arlene G. Woo

Working on hot press paper requires FASTER action -- sort of like riding a big wave like this.  I love using the blues and imagining myself in the water.  This is a half sheet of Fabriano (22 inches by 15 inches)  We have waves like this on the North Shore.  Looks like this guy made it!

Undecided on Title, Original Watercolor/collage by Arlene G. Woo

I began with a light wash, then added some collage pieces created from distressed pages,  Admittedly, I gave myself quite a challenge,  I like to have hidden images and compositions that make the viewer wonder what they are seeing.  There is a woman looking back at you.  Please give me some suggestions for a title.  Contact me: Arlene G. ORIGINAL MINI WATERCOLOR BY COLLEEN SANCHEZ

Reds are so challenging to paint, especially in watercolor. I've really been working toward trying to get the richness in color I'm after down in one pass, except for going back in and laying in some of the shadows. With this rose, to get the rich tones and varied colors I had to use one extra layer, but thats OK, I know for next time when doing a richly hued flower to use a lot more pigment. I had to then tell myself to use a really light hand so the background didn't compete with the flower. Do you think it worked?

Still working on some landscape oil studies and some larger watercolors. When I'm happy with some of them I'll post them.

A Crusher Wave, original watercolor by Hawaii artist Arlene G. Woo

This painting was accepted in the juried Hawaii Watercolor Society 2013 Members Show.  As a result it was picked to be in an exhibit in the Mayor's Office of Culture and the Arts:  Ka `ike o ka Moana: The Knowledge of the Ocean.  Recently I've been painting wet into wet with watercolors.  I've had to remind myself to use more paint and to work FASTER!  But I have enjoyed the challenge.  I am not a surfer but I love the water.
This is a half sheet of Fabriano paper (22"x15") If you'd like to comment, email Arlene G. Woo arlenesart@gmail.com

I decided to size up to 8 x 8 again, instead of the 6 x 6, for the square mini paintings. It allows a lot more room to play with rich color, light and shadow. I used several yellow watercolors for this hibiscus painting. I was able to get most of the rich yellow variations done in one pass. I did have to go back in to get the reds and pinks and the shadows though. I am really enjoying the looser quality I am heading toward with the florals, while still featuring the petal turns and curls. A rich background was called for to show off the blossom and then I lifted and put in some colors to suggest leaves and flowers behind her. Hope you enjoy her.
